Madison Borough (07940) is located in southeast Morris County, NJ - about 30 miles west of New York City. The community has a total area of 4.2 square miles and has approximately 5,640 housing units. The Borough was named after the 4th president of the United States, James Madison. The community was given the nickname "Rose City" after the Civil War because of its prosperous rose industry at the time. Madison has many neighborhood parks and tree-lined streets, as well as a thriving downtown business district with specialty shops and restaurants. The Madison Train Station is located downtown and is within walking distance for many residents. The train station offers an easy commute to NYC which makes the community very desirable. Most of the homes and neighborhoods in the Borough were established prior to the 1960s. Many of the homes are situated on compact property lots and feature old world charm. Beautiful victorian and colonial homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s are common. In recent years, builders have found it profitable to knock-down and replace older ranch and cape homes with high-end new construction. Some of the housing developments and neighborhoods include: The Hill, Knollwood, Fairwoods, Shadylawn, Bottle Hill, Madison Heights, Ridgedale Park, Cole Park, Ardsleigh, Stonehedge, Oak Knoll, Orchard, and Cross Gates.
Residents have easy access to NJ Route 24 which connects to Interstate 78 for an eastbound commute. The Madison Train Station offers direct service to Hoboken or NY Penn Station on the NJ Transit Morristown Line. Passengers who take the Hoboken train can switch to the PATH to reach NYC. Passengers who take the Midtown Direct train will arrive at NY Penn Station in about 45 minutes. Passengers can transfer at Newark Broad Street or Summit to reach the other destination if necessary. The Madison Train Station was built in 1916. The tracks were elevated through the downtown and no established roadways were hindered by crossing delays.
The Madison Public School District serves students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. There are three elementary schools: Central Avenue School, Kings Road School, and Torey J. Sabatini School. There is also a Junior High School (7-8) and High School (9-12). Madison is home to Drew University and the Madison-Florham Park Campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Madison has a charming downtown with shops and restaurants. Large national chain stores are located along NJ Route 10 in East Hanover. Residents can easily drive to the Short Hills Mall and Livingston Mall. The nearby towns of Florham Park, Chatham, and Morristown offer downtown shopping.
